Rome, off the record.
Rome, off the record.
The Roman world we inherited is one of marble and monuments. Emperors in profile. Temples measured and drawn. A civilisation remembered exactly as it wished to be. Beneath that record lies another one, far less careful and far more human. Scratched into plaster and stone across the empire are the words of people nobody thought to write down. A joke about a neighbour. A name carved beside another name. A complaint, a boast, a declaration of love. A burst of creativity, or of boredom. Written quickly, meant for a moment, and preserved for two thousand years entirely by accident.
These are the voices we work with.
Each print in our collection is an illustrated reproduction of real ancient Roman graffiti, researched and rendered to honour its history. We are not interested in the version of Rome that survives in museums. We are interested in the workers, the soldiers and the lovers who lived beneath it, and in the strange intimacy of reading something written by someone who never expected to be read.
They are the reason the past feels close rather than distant.
Hold their words on your wall and two thousand years becomes a very short distance.
